How Often Should You Have Your House Professionally Cleaned?

The question we get asked most is some version of 'how often do I actually need this?' The honest answer is that it depends on who lives in the house, what they do all day, and what walks in the door with them. But there's a rule of thumb that fits most Wichita households, and it's every two weeks.

Start with who lives there. A couple with no pets and no kids who take their shoes off at the door can stretch to a monthly clean without the house looking or smelling any different. Every person added brings foot traffic, crumbs and whatever they walked through; every child adds spills and fingerprints; every dog or cat adds hair, dander and the odd accident. A family of four with a dog is at the far end of that scale, and for them we'd say weekly for the kitchen and bathrooms and every two weeks for the rest.

Then there's what's outside. Kansas is windy and dry for a good part of the year, and the dust finds its way in around every window and door. Homes on the edge of town, near open fields or a gravel road, pick it up faster than a house in College Hill with a paved drive. Spring brings pollen on top of that, and if anyone in the house has allergies or asthma, a clean every two weeks — with the ceiling fans, blinds and vents done properly — makes a noticeable difference to how the house breathes.

Then there's what you do between cleans. A professional clean takes care of the bathrooms, the kitchen, the floors, the dusting and the surfaces; what keeps it that way is the light upkeep in between — dishes done, counters wiped, a quick vacuum of the high-traffic spots. A house that gets that is genuinely clean two weeks later. A house that doesn't is ready for us after one.

The signs it's overdue, in the order we see them: the bathroom is the first thing you notice when you walk in; there's a film of dust on the TV stand the day after you wiped it; the kitchen floor feels tacky in socks; and the house has a smell you've stopped noticing but visitors haven't. Any one of those and it's time.

One more thing worth knowing: a recurring clean costs less per visit than a one-off, and not by a little. A house that's cleaned every two weeks stays at baseline, and each visit is maintenance. A house that's cleaned twice a year needs a deep clean each time. If you're weighing it up, the schedule is almost always the better deal.
