Deep Clean vs. Regular Clean: What's the Difference, and Which Do You Need?

The most common misunderstanding in this business is what a 'clean' includes. Someone books a regular clean, expects the baseboards and the inside of the oven to be done, and is unhappy when they aren't. Or someone books a deep clean for a house that just needs a tidy, and pays for hours they didn't need. Here's how we draw the line.

A regular clean — sometimes called a standard or maintenance clean — is what keeps a house at baseline. In the kitchen: counters, stovetop, sink, the outsides of the appliances, the floor. In the bathrooms: shower, tub, toilet, sink, mirror, fixtures, floor. Everywhere else: dusting of surfaces and furniture, vacuuming, mopping, beds made if you'd like, trash out. It takes a cleaner a couple of hours in an average house, and it's meant to be repeated every one, two or four weeks.

A deep clean is everything a regular clean is, plus everything it walks past. Baseboards, door frames, trim and switch plates. Ceiling fans, light fixtures and vents. Inside the oven, the fridge, the microwave. Window sills, tracks and blinds. Tile and grout scrubbed rather than wiped. Cabinet fronts washed. Behind and under whatever can be moved. It takes a crew most of a day, because there's a lot of it and none of it is quick.

So which do you need? If the house hasn't been professionally cleaned in a while — or ever — you need a deep clean. Regular cleaning keeps a clean house clean; it can't bring a house that's got away from you back to baseline in two hours, and a cleaner who tries will do a rushed job on everything. That's why we start every new recurring customer with a deep clean. It's a bigger first bill, and it's the reason every visit after it is quick, consistent and cheaper.

Beyond that first one, most households want a deep clean once or twice a year: spring, when the windows come open and the winter dust shows, and before the holidays, when the house fills up with guests. Add one before you list a house for sale, after a renovation, and any time you move — that last one is its own service, because an empty house needs the inside of every cabinet done too.

A quick test if you're not sure: run a finger along the top of a door frame and look at the top of the fridge. If either one surprises you, you're a deep clean. If neither does, a regular schedule will keep you there.
